Both are Chanel's take on the cool masculine, at different volumes. Platinum Egoiste is sharp and austere: rosemary and galbanum over a grey vetiver-and-oakmoss base, with a real bite to it. Boy is the same family declawed, with a pale, translucent lavender, grapefruit and lemon lifting it rather than cutting it, and heliotrope, vanilla and coumarin rounding the base into something soft. Platinum is the one that announces itself; Boy is the one that does not.

The lightness that defines it becomes a liability. Grapefruit, lemon and that pale lavender are all volatile and high heat compresses them badly, so the airy opening this is built on is very short here. What follows is heliotrope, vanilla and coumarin, which sweeten as skin warms, so the fragrance moves from translucent to powdery faster than intended. Moss and sandalwood stop it going soft entirely, but it works in air conditioning and struggles outdoors at midday.
