It opens beachy. Dewberry and coconut give it a soft, faintly sunscreen-like tropical start. But it is a floral at heart: within about ten minutes a clean, watery magnolia backed by jasmine and lily of the valley takes over, and the coconut settles into a warm backdrop rather than the main event. So think fruity-floral with a tropical opening rather than a straight coconut fragrance.

They are not variations of each other despite the shared name. Gorgeous Orchid is a vanilla scent, built almost entirely on vanilla and vanilla orchid with an ozonic thread to stop it going flat. Gorgeous Magnolia has no vanilla in it at all: dewberry, coconut and orange open it, magnolia, jasmine sambac and ylang carry the heart, and musk, patchouli and blonde woods close it. Orchid is the sweet one, Magnolia is the floral one, and liking either tells you nothing about the other.

It comes closer than it does in cool air, which is worth knowing before you buy. Coconut and dewberry both read softer and creamier on warm skin, so the tropical opening leans further toward the sun-lotion association here. The magnolia arrives faster in this weather though, and once the white florals are in place the coconut drops to a backdrop. Blonde woods and patchouli keep the finish dry rather than sweet.
