The EDP leans autumn and winter. Its incense, labdanum and sandalwood base can turn heavy in high heat and humidity. The citrus-and-spice opening is fine for warm spring days and air-conditioned settings, but for peak summer the lighter EDT is the smarter choice. Save the EDP for cooler evenings, where its warmth has room to work rather than fighting the weather.
They are three readings of one idea rather than three strengths of the same liquid, and the EDT is the lightest and most citrus-forward of them. This EDP adds ginger, nutmeg and jasmine over incense, labdanum and amberwood, which is where its smoky, resinous depth comes from. Bleu de Chanel Parfum goes elsewhere again: lemon zest, mint and artemisia into lavender and pineapple over sandalwood, tonka bean and amberwood, making it smoother and creamier and much less smoky than this one. The EDP sits in the middle by weight and at the dark end by character.
Grapefruit, lemon and mint open Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum citrus and fresh spicy, ginger, nutmeg, jasmine and melon warm the heart, and incense, amber, cedar and sandalwood close a woody base.
No longevity or sillage figures recorded, but the amber-incense base suits cooler months, from an office day through to a winter wedding. AUROME offers it as a 3–9 ml decant from the original Chanel bottle, so he can test it for a week before deciding.
