It lands in the same territory by a different route. Ultra Male is built on pear and black lavender with mint and citrus, then cinnamon, caraway and clary sage over a black vanilla base. 9PM uses apple rather than pear, keeps lavender and cinnamon, and adds orange blossom and lily of the valley through the heart before landing on vanilla, tonka, amber and patchouli. The JPG is the fruitier and sharper; 9PM is rounder and warmer, with more amber in the finish.

In daylight, usually. Vanilla, tonka and amber all gain weight on warm skin, and the apple up top is candied rather than tart, so there is little acidity holding the sweetness back once the bergamot has gone. Cinnamon stays sharp, which helps. Patchouli in the base is the only genuinely dry note, and this works after sunset and in air conditioning, and a single spray does more here than two would in winter.
