Both put fruit against tobacco-adjacent warmth and take different routes. Triumph of Bacchus opens on rum with white peach and green apple, then tonka and patchouli over tobacco, vanilla and amber, so the booze leads. Carlisle keeps the green apple but sharpens it with saffron and nutmeg instead of rum, runs rose, osmanthus and davana through the heart, and lands on vanilla, patchouli and opopanax. The Argos is the boozier; Carlisle is the more floral and balsamic.

It softens, and the saffron is what keeps the opening interesting. Green apple reads crisp and almost tart in cool air but turns rounder and sweeter on warm skin, which removes some of the tension that makes the first ten minutes of this surprising. Saffron holds its dry, metallic edge in heat and does more of the work as a result. Underneath, vanilla and opopanax gain weight through the afternoon, so the balsamic second half arrives earlier here.

Owners who have compared bottles say so. A review on Basenotes from someone holding both reports the older formulation at 77 percent alcohol against 81 percent in current stock, along with a colour shift from dark orange-amber to a light copper, and says Herod, Layton and Oajan were changed in the same way.
