Is Patchouli Absolu a dark, hippie-style patchouli?

No, it is cleaner and drier than that. Tom Ford builds it from several patchouli fractions layered together, then frames them with bay leaf, rosemary and moss up top and a tonka-amber-leather base, so it reads polished and woody rather than earthy or dirty. Patchouli Absolu opens on herbal bay leaf and rosemary before the earthy patchouli accord settles in. Guaiac wood and cypriol thicken the heart, giving this eau de parfum (EDP) a warm spicy, woody character rather than a sweet one.

Tonka and amber soften the dry-down, while leather and oakmoss keep it grounded and faintly smoky. Expect it to last well and project with real confidence, so one or two sprays are enough.
