They sit at opposite ends of the house's warmth. Tobacco Vanille is sweet and enveloping, tobacco leaf and spice over vanilla, cacao and tonka with dried fruit underneath. Noir is dry and grainy instead: bergamot and violet flower up top, black pepper, nutmeg and iris resin through the heart, then opoponax, patchouli, vetiver and a trace of civet. There is vanilla in the base but it is a floor rather than the subject; Tobacco Vanille comforts; Noir does not try to.

They move in opposite directions. Iris resin stays cool and powdery on warm skin, which keeps the middle of this composed in humidity where a sweeter oriental would collapse. The civet in the base is the note that gains, coming forward sooner and reading more animalic in heat than in cool air, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on you. Bergamot and verbena give you a brief lift and then vanish.
