It is a classic aromatic-woody, the kind people call barbershop. A bergamot top leads into a lavender heart, resting on sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and ambergris, for a dry, clean, refined woody feel. The effect is polished and old-school masculine rather than sweet or fresh. It is a Creed heritage scent from 1987.
Older bottles listed oakmoss that was trimmed in later batches, likely for IFRA compliance, and owners of vintage bottles often say the newer ones read milder and more citrus-forward. Batch strength varies too. If you loved a vintage sample, try a current decant before buying, since the classic lavender-cedar spine is intact but the edges are softer now.
They live in the same old-school, barbershop-adjacent world. Bois du Portugal is drier and more lavender-and-cedar focused, where Guerlain Vetiver leans greener and earthier. If you grew up around Habit Rouge or classic vetivers, this will feel familiar but built with richer materials. It is a heritage scent rather than a modern crowd-pleaser.
Bergamot opens Bois du Portugal calm and citrus-clean, lavender softens the heart into something aromatic and quiet, and sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and ambergris build a woody, powdery base.
