It is a supporting note here rather than the subject. Crystal Saffron Extrait puts saffron in the centre and lets its metallic, medicinal edge lead. Brioni Intense uses saffron to give a fruity-woody composition some tension: it arrives behind green apple and tangerine and sits against an oud-and-ambroxan base rather than against bare musk. The result is tailored and restrained where the Matiere Premiere is deliberately stark, so take this if you want saffron in a fragrance rather than a fragrance about saffron.

That is the risk. Green apple reads tart in cool air and sweeter as skin warms, so the crisp, slightly sour quality that makes the middle interesting softens in humidity. Saffron holds its shape and the oud-and-ambroxan base stays dry, so the fragrance does not collapse, it just loses its sharpest edge. Evenings suit it better than afternoons here.
