Why is this labeled Batch 2017?

Because Akaster is not one of the Parfums de Marly releases you find easily on a shelf, so the production year states plainly what a decant was drawn from rather than leaving it to guesswork. It launched in 2015 and has never had the visibility of the house's Layton-and-Carlisle side of the catalogue. On a rose-oud, where materials vary more than in a designer fresh, the batch year is worth stating.

How does it compare with Carlisle?

They are the two extremes of what this house does. Carlisle is plush and balsamic: green apple and saffron into tonka, rose and davana over vanilla, patchouli and opopanax. Akaster is austere by comparison, cypress and lemon over Bulgarian rose and geranium with agarwood, musk and cardamom underneath, and no sweetness anywhere in it. Carlisle is the crowd-pleaser; Akaster is the one that shows what the house can do when it is not trying to please.

Cypress and lemon give Akaster a cool, citrus-fresh opening, before rose and geranium build a proper floral heart. The base turns smoky and warm spicy – oud, musk and cardamom – grounding the whole composition in something more oriental than the top notes suggest.

It works for an office day that runs into evening plans, or a date once the weather cools. Longevity and sillage are both rated 4, so expect this eau de parfum (EDP) to last through the evening and project comfortably. AUROME sells this Parfums de Marly Akaster (Batch 2017) as a 2–15 ml decant filled from the original bottle, a good way to try this niche rose-oud pairing before buying more. Refined and unisex.
