Two YSL masculines a generation apart. L'Homme Libre is the green one: violet leaf, basil and star anise into pink pepper and nutmeg over vetiver and patchouli, dry and herbal throughout. Y adds fruit and resin instead, apple and ginger up top, sage and juniper through the heart, then amberwood, tonka, cedar and olibanum. L'Homme Libre is the sharper and more aromatic; Y is smoother, sweeter and built for wider appeal.

Partly, and the amberwood is what decides it. Bergamot, ginger and apple give a bright first twenty minutes that reads well on hot skin, and sage and juniper keep the middle dry. The trouble is underneath: amberwood and tonka both gain weight in humidity, and olibanum adds a resinous density that makes the last hours heavier here than in cool air. Fine for an air-conditioned office, harder work outdoors after noon.
