Is Oud Essentiel a heavy, medicinal oud?

No, and that is the point of it. Thierry Wasser runs the agarwood through a French filter, framing it with saffron, Bulgarian rose and a little leather rather than the raw, barnyard oud of a traditional attar. The result is smooth, rosy and refined, an oud built for someone who finds most real ouds too sharp or too animalic.

Is it a rose scent or an oud scent?

It sits right between the two. The rose and saffron give it a warm floral heart, while the oud, cedar and frankincense keep the base dry and resinous, so neither side fully wins. That balance is what makes it wearable in a way a pure oud or a pure rose often is not.

Saffron opens Oud Essentiel on a warm spicy note before rose, leather and olibanum fill a rich, resinous heart, classic Guerlain territory.

Oud and cedar close the base, giving this composition a clean, woody finish against the spiced floral heart. Both longevity and sillage are rated 4 out of 5, so expect it to last well through an evening wedding or dinner.

It suits a winter wedding or an office day that runs into the evening in Dhaka’s cooler months. Thierry Wasser’s 2017 unisex composition comes as a 2–15 ml decant filled from the original bottle.
