Black Aoud is the stricter of the two. It is nearly bare: mandarin into rose over labdanum, musk, oud, patchouli and sandalwood, with no sweetness anywhere and nothing to cushion the entry. Aoud Line keeps the oud and Turkish rose but adds vanilla from the top and raspberry in the base, which softens the wood considerably by the second hour. If you want the rose-and-oud idea without a landing pad, this is it.
It arrives early and stays put. The mandarin flash that opens it is over almost immediately in high heat, so the rose and oud are effectively the first thing you meet. Neither sweetens on warm skin, and labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood underneath are dry resins and woods that hold their shape in humidity. What heat changes is timing rather than character: this is the same uncompromising fragrance, just without its brief introduction.
Long-time wearers say it has. One review on Basenotes calls the current version "such a sad reformulation of what once was" and describes it as unrecognisable next to the bottle that reviewer knew. Montale has published nothing, so this is wearer testimony rather than a documented formula change. On a fragrance in production since 2006 and built on natural agarwood and rose, some drift between eras is close to unavoidable.
Black Aoud opens on a hint of mandarin before dark rose and rich oud take over almost completely, with labdanum, musk, patchouli and sandalwood building a heavy, earthy base.
Expect it to last well past midnight and be felt by everyone in the room, fitting a winter wedding or formal evening date. AUROME offers this unisex Montale scent as a 2–15 ml decant from the original bottle, worth a week’s wear before deciding on a full bottle.
