A dark, austere leather-musk. Black pepper and nutmeg open it spicy, a heart of leather, teak wood and sandalwood adds a dry woody body, and a base of musk, amber and patchouli grounds it. So it reads as a raw, resinous musk rather than the soft, clean musks most people expect. It is a 2010 release by house founder Pierre Montale.
It looks that way. Montale's current listing shows a somewhat different note set, adding clove, saffron and orris and dropping the teak wood that appears on the original 2010 breakdown. So newer bottles may smell a little different from older ones; compare what you receive if the original profile matters to you.
The opposite. It is built on raw leather and dark resins rather than laundry-clean musk, so it reads serious and slightly harsh rather than cuddly. A little goes a long way, so apply sparingly if you are used to softer musks.
Nutmeg joins black pepper to open Black Musk with fresh spicy warmth, leather, teak wood and sandalwood take the heart, and musk, amber and patchouli close a powdery, leather-forward base.
No longevity or sillage figures recorded, but the smoky leather base suggests evening wear during cooler months rather than a daytime summer outing. AUROME offers it as a 3–15 ml decant from the original Montale bottle, a fair way to test it for a week.
