Surprisingly well. The pineapple reads ripe and faintly fermented rather than candied, so it rounds off the dry black pepper and tobacco instead of clashing with them. Within about ten minutes it hands off to a patchouli-and-coffee heart, so the fruit is really a bridge into the darker part of the scent rather than the main event. If the pairing sounds strange on paper, it is far more coherent on skin.

The name invites the comparison, but the two are built differently. Sauvage Elixir runs grapefruit, cinnamon, nutmeg and cardamom into a lavender heart over licorice, amber, patchouli and Haitian vetiver, and lavender is the note that defines it. Salvo Elixir has no lavender at all: it opens on black pepper, tobacco and pineapple, moves through patchouli, iris and coffee, and finishes on amber, benzoin and vanilla. They share a dark, spicy-amber weight and a similar mood, not a formula, so judge this one on its tobacco-and-coffee side rather than on how close it gets to the Dior.

The dark half holds and the fruit does not. Pineapple is the first thing to go in high heat, which shortens the odd, fermented opening that makes this interesting in the first place. Coffee, patchouli and tobacco stay dry and keep their shape in humidity, but benzoin, labdanum and vanilla in the base thicken as skin warms, so the second half sits heavier here than in winter. An evening fragrance in this climate, and one that rewards a light hand.
