L'Intense is no longer part of the current YSL lineup, so every bottle still moving is older stock and the production year is the honest way to describe what a decant contains. It also matters because L'Intense is the outlier in the line: where the others build on cardamom, this one leads with iris and violet, so anyone hunting it down is usually after that specific version rather than the family.

Powder instead of spice. Le Parfum runs pepper, anise and bergamot into a fruity, labdanum-heavy heart and finishes dark on vanilla, patchouli and vetiver. L'Intense drops the pepper and anise completely and opens on iris and violet, both cool and powdery, then moves into vanilla and sage over tonka bean and patchouli. Le Parfum is the darker of the two; L'Intense is the softer, more elegant and least masculine-by-default entry in the line.
